Thanks to everyone that came out to support the Santee Cable Park vote!

After the meeting on Weds, I wanted to post a quick recap and follow up. There was a huge turnout for the City Council meeting in Santee, with people both for an against the issue. The developer of the project, Trevor Sudweeks was there, along with the entire board of the Padre Dam who are sponsoring the project. We heard a lot of good opinions (and some not so good ones) from everyone, for and against. It got heated a few times, but the City Council did a decent job of keeping it on track and on topic.

We had some WBSD members that spoke in support of the park, Gary from DBG, Josh and Geoff from Wakesports, even Dave from WakeWorld was there speaking in support. People came down from as far as Huntington Beach and carlsbad. It was cool just to see the community pull together for something we all know would be beneficial.

Unfortunately, after more than 4 hours of deliberation, no vote was had, and no decision made. Changes to the layout and plan were proposed to the developer and Padre Dam committee, and we will now have to wait for them to change the proposal to meet the City’s demands. We’ll see what happens…maybe we will see a vote in a couple more months?

OK, I’ve got to say it. I hear over and over again about how cable and winching are the future of wakeboarding. It seems to be the answer everybody comes up with when asked. I can see how both can allow more access to the sport of wakeboarding but is numbers the basis for the “future” of wakeboarding? I personally don’t think so.

I have to admit I’ve never been on the end of a cable or winch. Ever. I’m sure they are both fun and I’d give anything to have either a cable park or personally own a winch. That’s not really the point.

What is the future of wakeboarding? I guess it really comes down to what the definition of the “future” is. Does it mean what will bring larger numbers to the sport? Does it mean something now is lessened for something else at a later time? I’m not really sure.

When it’s all said and done I will say this………..

There’s nothing like being towed behind a boat. I don’t think anything now or in the future will change that. Glass, fully ballasted boat, a tower, tunes pumping…there is no substitute for that. The perfect wake will always be the epitome of what it is and means to be wakeboarding.

Everything else might further the sport but the future is already here.

Officials say a proposed cable ski park would attract more youths and families to Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, but some neighbors say the crowds will bring traffic and noise to their community.

The city of Santee’s environmental report on the project has been completed and is available for public review until June 13. The Santee City Council is expected to hold a public hearing and vote on the plans in late June or early July.

The Padre Dam Municipal Water District, which oversees the 190-acre park, proposed the cable ski park in 2006. Using one of the seven lakes, the $2.5 million ski park would allow wakeboarders to skim along the water pulled by a cable from above. Padre Dam’s board approved the project in November 2007.

There are about 140 cable ski parks worldwide, with 10 in the United States: five in Florida and others in Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma and North Carolina.

The ski park at Santee Lakes would be built and managed by Sudweeks Development of Canyon Lake. The company would pay at least $100,000 a year in a 30-year lease with the water district. It says the park would earn more than $1 million yearly in ticket sales.

The proposal includes six 35-foot-tall stanchions to support the cables, a 9,700-square-foot complex with an observation deck, and a 3,200-square-foot restaurant. The park would provide 128 parking spaces, plus 139 overflow spots for major events.

The cable skiers would be swimming in Santee Lakes’ reclaimed water, which is treated sewage water. The water meets cleanliness standards for recreational use, although it isn’t intended for drinking.

The environmental report by Santee city planners found that the cable ski park would not have a significant effect on noise, traffic, water quality or wildlife.

The planners said the cable ski park would add a negligible amount of noise and that neighbors’ views of the park would mostly be screened by trees. Almost 500 vehicle trips a day would be made to the park, but that would not have a significant effect on local roads, the report said.

Lupe Gillenberg, 65, who has lived on Pebble Beach Drive near Santee Lakes for 20 years, disagreed. She said she fears the cable ski park will destroy her neighborhood.

“There’s going to be too many people, too many cars, too many buses,” she said. “It’s going to be noisy and dirty and crowded.”

Allen Carlisle, manager of Santee Lakes, said he held numerous meetings with neighborhood residents to address their concerns about the park. To discourage visitors to the cable ski park from parking in the neighborhood, visitors will be reimbursed for their parking fee at Santee Lakes, he said.

Carlisle said it will take about 18 months to build the cable ski park once the Santee City Council approves the plan.

“We think it’s going to be not only a benefit for Santee Lakes, but the community as a whole,” Carlisle said.

I would kill for something like this to hit San Diego County!

The newest cable park in the U.S. is about to open next month. Read on about what you can expect from Wake Nation in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Pete Kennedy quit his day job to open a cable park. The idea took flight after Kennedy stumbled upon the Cam Sur Watersports Complex by accident during a medical mission trip to the Philippines. “Kids from all around the world were there to hit this cable park,” Kennedy says. “I went one day to check it out, and took one spin on the cable and was hooked.”As soon as Kennedy returned to the states from his trip to the Philippines, he quit his job and began planning his own cable park. “My goal was to model some of the cable parks you see in Europe,” Kennedy says. “I wanted to create a country club for kids kind of atmosphere.”

The location Cincinnati was actually Kennedy’s third choice of location for his first cable park. After ruling out Los Angeles and Denver as too expensive, Kennedy settled on a perfect plot of land in Cincinnati, Ohio. “There’s not a whole lot to do in Cincinnati, so we though we’d give the kids out there something to do in the summer time,” Kennedy says. The cable Wake Nation is the only six-tower cable system in the U.S. The cable can hold seven riders at a time, and is a total length is about 2,200 ft. The cable runs counterclockwise in a large oval. “Some of the five-tower systems have that one hard, 90 degree turn. All of our corners are super easy, so even beginners can ride the cable,” Kennedy says. During the planning stages of the park, Kennedy travelled to Germany to meet with legendary cable designer, Bruno Ricksen, to create the perfect cable. “We wanted the cable to reach both pros and beginners,” Kennedy said.

The lake Wake Nation Cincinnati sits on a 10-acre, 8 feet deep, man made lake, with a 2.5-acre island in the middle. About 150 gallons of water is constantly being pumped into the lake by an aquifer installed at the bottom of the lake. After digging out the lake, a plastic, tarp-like liner was put in place on the bottom and later covered with dirt in order to keep water from slowly seeping into the ground.

The obstacles The cable park plans on having about six to seven obstacles in the lake, all built by Wake Nation themselves. These include a sun box with a cinch reel, a flat bar, rooftop, and two kickers standing at 2 ft and 5 ft.

The pro shop The on site pro shop will be a 1,500 square-foot building right on the lake. The shop will have a 15ft glass wall looking out over the water. Products by companies like Liquid Force, Hyperlite, Underground Products, Nike 6.0, O’Neill, Anarchy Eyewear, and Jet Pilot will be sold in store.

Upcoming events Wake Nation will have a soft opening May 1, and their grand opening June 2. The grand opening will have Liquid Force Pro riders like Aaron Reed, Kevin Henshaw, Melissa Marquardt, and Tom Fooshee show off on the cable before a local tournament, judged by the pros, will take place. Kennedy said he’s expecting close to a thousand people to attend the grand opening. Wake nation will also hold the USA Wakeboard national cable championships in July.

Okay so for the last 2 years there has been talk about putting a cable park right here in San Diego’s very own Santee Lakes! Not many people know as it was never publicized, and it still doesn’t get much talk. This would be an awesome chance for everybody, especially those who cant afford boats but who love the sport, to just go out and ride. It would even be fun just to go out and have dinner (they would be putting in a restaurant as well) while enjoying the lake and watching people ride- the best part seeing people crash! And who knows, with San Diego being such a hot spot this could be a chance to bring in huge events and competitions with some of the pro riders! As of right now, I’m not sure where exactly this project lies, but the below website gives more information and allows you to contact the project creators with your opinions! I think if we get enough people to push this we can get the ball rolling a little faster and have our own very own cable park!
