After some discussion this week about hitting up El Cap (http://www.wakeboardsd.net/forum/index.php?topic=735) a bunch of us headed out to the lake for some shredding and surfing.  It was a beautiful day, awesome weather, and even though the lake was all chop, we had a great time!  (A couple pics here from Saturday @ Mission Bay)

We were heading back to camp near dark when we found a boat full of seamen that were stranded (The ignition cylinder had broken on their craft and they couldn’t get it started) so we towed them all the way up river against the current to fisher’s (whilst partying the entire way)

When a couple of Apache Indians were sighted on the horizon (Jon and I climbed a random cliff in order to jump off it, unbeknown to us it was covered in extremely sharp volcanic rock! This led to a strange walk known as “The Apache Dance”)

Everyone survived, and we headed back in toward evening so we werent stuck pulling the boat out after dark again. Ran into a few technical difficulties with the wave runners, so Eric and I enjoyed a nice sunset tow whilst drinking some Ice cold CL’s.

So we got back in town yesterday from the 2008 Hipp Marine River Rendezvous, and it was an awesome time!  There were a good 10 WBSD members out for the trip, and the good times were in full effect.  Myself and Dani rolled out around 6pm on Thursday night, Gary, Chad, Jenny, Steve, Ryan, Mike, Metis and Steve were already out on wednesday, and Evan and Jamie headed out friday night.  

We showed up around 10:15 on thursday to find Gary, and Ryan pulling up to meet us in a golf cart, and had already been celebrating for quite a while.  We unloaded at the trailer and headed up to the house to start the party as well.  Some beverages were enjoyed by all, a game of human Jenga was played when Jenny passed out, and Gary played about 15 hours of Wii Fit.  After a late night offroad golf cart ride, we passed out for a couple hours of sleep before getting up to wakeboard Friday morning.

We hit the water friday morning and got some decent sessions in – the water was glass and there was no one out other than us and a few border patrol agents doing training.  We rode for an hour, then pulled out the wakesurfer, which was awesome until I took a pull and Gary plowed my boat onto a sandbar.  Some damage was sustained (I think ALL of our boats sustained quite a bit of damage this trip – the DBG Kayot, M&M’s Calabria, and ours as well).  Thats the risk you run when running the river I guess.

We had a meeting with the Hipp Marine staff around 3 on friday, and figured out the plan for the Rendezvous on Saturday.  We (DBG, WBSD, and Wakesports) were to man stop 5 on the rendezvous – which was basically to camp out at Ferguson Lake all day.

We headed out to Fergusons around 8:30 am on Saturday and got up there to some pretty decent water.  A few boats were out riding, but it was pretty decent conditions.  We anchored the Kayot with a flag up for people to see, and then took a few pulls behind the Wakesports Pro-V 2.  People started showing up after a couple hours, and then the party got started.  By 3pm everyone was up there, about 15 or 20 boats just anchored up, blasting music, and partying.  It was a great time!

Headed back to Hidden Shores and showerd up before dinner and awards around 7pm.  A few hours of laughs, drinks, and nicknames (Mercury Mike, Slingblade, Tubs, General Really Good Guy, Gumdrop) and then we dispersed to get some serious partying done.  It was  a late night, when we finally wrapped up around 3am…the morning came too soon.  Everyone packed up, hit the road, and we stopped by the Roadhouse Cafe in Yuma for some ribs before the long drive home and starting up the week again on monday.  

After work today…I miss the river!  Looking forward to helping Hipp Marine out next year at the 2009 Rendezvous!

A bunch of WBSD members are heading out this week for the Hipp Marine River Rendezvous out at the Colorado River.  We are staying at and around Hidden Shores, and from what I have heard about that place – it should be a great time.  I haven’t attended their Rendezvous yet (They started it with the first one last year I believe), but have heard awesome things about it.  With about 10 or so WBSD members going, I have no doubt it will be a great time!  Stay tuned for pictures and stories as I’m sure we’re going to have plenty of both when we get back on sunday!

Loading the Calabria Up with Ladies!

The first official WBSD Meet up was had on Saturday (7/12) at San Vicente Reservoir. There was an awesome turnout – nearly 10 boats and around 30-40 people. We headed out and met up with Geoff and the Wakesports crew around 6:45 (Thanks for being on time and grabbing the spot Geoff – I ran into some complications…haha) and set up shop, then jumped on the water for a couple hours of riding while the water was still somewhat decent. Luckily, we bought up almost all of the wakeboard/slalom course passes, so any WBSD boat was welcome to head over there for a session on the best water at the lake.

We fired up the bbq around 11 and threw some burgers and dogs on to help balance out the mass quantities of Coors Light being imbibed by all. Horseshoes were thrown, beers were drank, shit was talked, and Ian from M20 passed around a bottle of Patron. It was great to meet everyone in person who is involved on the site, and put some faces to the names we have seen. If anything, it quickly made me realize that we aren’t dealing with a ton of people who just love to wakeboard… we share a love of partying as well!

Where It All Went Down

Around 2:30 we headed out to do some serious riding and tore up the wakeboard course. Others went out to get some wakesurfing in. Everyone got a pull and showed off some insane skills – check out the video (will be posted soon) for proof of that! We rode until about 5:30, then headed back to the spot to pack up.

Overall, it was a perfect day, with a perfect turnout. Everyone made some new friends and riding buddies, and we are already planning the next one (Hopefully one more in August before San V closes for good). One thing discussed with Kevin the Ranger was ways to go about opening Otay Lakes for water contact activities – so keep an eye out on this site for info regarding that. We are a community of like minded people and should use this as a way to coordinate getting the city to listen to us! More on that to come.

Now I had never been to the Carlsbad Lagoon until this point so I really didn’t know what to expect as far as launch fees and permits. Just so everyone else knows the process and you’re ready when you get there. You have to provide or have your insurance company fax over a copy of your insurance policy showing that you have $300k in coverage for property damage/great bodily injury. You also have to add the Carlsbad Lagoon as “Other Interested Person” on your insurance policy. Then you have to either buy a $25 day use launch permit or a $500 membership that allows you to go as many times as you want. The City of Carlsbad also requires you to purchase a permit from them. The staff assured me that the initial sign up process was the only time i’d have to go through this process since they have all of my info on file now. Just FYI, they aren’t just making all these requirements for their health….it’s actually required by their insurance company and the City of Carlsbad.

The staff was very helpful and informative and they offer alot of awesome social programs. The lagoon has a small but cool pro-shop with some kick ass equipment and a Ronix Rep who is almost always there. Earlier in the day I had just got a wakesurf board and I was looking for a wakesurf rope to go with it. The staff at “Wakesports” which is the shop at Carlsbad Lagoon ordered me the wakesurf rope I wanted since they didn’t have it in stock. Then they offered to let me use one of their demo ropes until mine came in (very cool of them). Wakesports’ pro-shop and customer service were very good, I highly recommend shopping there if you want some quality equipment and helpful knowledgeable staff.

So I get my boat into the water. I see one other boat on the whole lagoon and not one ounce of chop. This is definitely not what i’m used to and I was super stoked. I had just bought two more ballast sacks in addition to the stock front ballast my boat has. I filled up all the sacks which gave me 1250lbs of ballast..INSANE. My boat already throws a huge wake, but this was insane. After a few amazing glassy water wakeboard sessions we turned to the wakesurf board. Now this was my first time wakesurfing and all I have to say is that I LOVE WAKESURFING!!

Dylan and I both have about six years experience surfing so that helped us tremendously. We were tearing apart the wake with frontside and backside boardslides Dylan busted out a 180 and was riding switch for awhile. We basically closed out the session wakesurfing because we loved it so much. Overall, I give the Carlsbad Lagoon a high recommendation because once you finish the signing up process; You get uncrowded glassy waters, a wakesports friendly layout with long straightaways and an area where you can clean and flush you’re boat when you’re done with you session. Kjo, Evan, Dani, and I headed out around 7 this morning for a morning sesh our at San V.  It was decent water, and we got some good riding in early in the morning, but by 11 there was quite a few boats out there and it got pretty choppy.  We filled up Kevins stock ballast which I think is about 700 lbs in his ’06 Sanger V210, but then added our 600lb Skylon sack, so with about 1300 lbs of ballast, the wake was pretty much insane.  Everyone was throwing huge airs.  I would definitely recommend that skylon sack by the way.  Not too hard to fill or empty, and it makes a great addition to stock ballast setups.
