Team Malinoski Wins 2011 Nautique Wake Games Title
Clifford, Wing & Hansen Claim Pro Titles

Orlando, Fla. - Fans lined the shores of the Orlando Watersports Complex
today to catch the final rounds of action at the 2011 Nautique Wake
Games, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. As the 10 remaining divisions
wrapped up their competition on the water, Team Malinoski emerged as the
winner of this year's team challenge with 801 points.

Captained by pro rider Rusty Malinoski, the 10-person team claimed this
year's cash prize after finishing with multiple top-three finishes in
various divisions, including wins by Kat Laird in the Veteran Women's
division and also by newly signed Rockstar Energy Drink team rider
Daniel Powers in the Jr. Pro Men's division. The team consisted of
Malinoski, Powers, Laird, Shaun Murray, Scott Stewart, Danny Hampson,
Megan Ethell, Will Green, Craig Buss and Dustin Abel.

Malinoski also came close to winning the Pro Men's division today, too,
but ultimately fell short to teenage Australian phenom Harley Clifford,
who took home his second consecutive Pro Men's division title. Malinoski
and Bob Soven rounded out the top three, respectively.

Clifford also won the $1,000 prize in the Rockstar Energy Drink Double
Up Contest, after landing a Melon Poke Heelside Frontside 900.

Newly signed Rockstar Energy Drink team rider and fellow Australian
wakeboarder Amber Wing took first place in the Pro Women's division,
upsetting top-seeded Nicola Butler, who finished in third place. Young
gun Meagan Ethell rounded out the top three podium spots, with her
second-place finish.

In the Pro Wakeskate division, defending Wake Games shredder and newly
signed Rockstar Energy Drink team rider Reed Hansen successfully
defended his title today, with Danny Hampson and Brian Grubb rounded out
the top three, respectively.

Also making waves out on the water today was local wakeboarder Jason
Soven, who won the Boys division today, as well as the PCM Amateur Best
Trick Award, after landing a massive Dum Dum. Jason is the younger
brother of pro riders Phillip and Bob Soven.

OK, I’ve got to say it. I hear over and over again about how cable and winching are the future of wakeboarding. It seems to be the answer everybody comes up with when asked. I can see how both can allow more access to the sport of wakeboarding but is numbers the basis for the “future” of wakeboarding? I personally don’t think so.

I have to admit I’ve never been on the end of a cable or winch. Ever. I’m sure they are both fun and I’d give anything to have either a cable park or personally own a winch. That’s not really the point.

What is the future of wakeboarding? I guess it really comes down to what the definition of the “future” is. Does it mean what will bring larger numbers to the sport? Does it mean something now is lessened for something else at a later time? I’m not really sure.

When it’s all said and done I will say this………..

There’s nothing like being towed behind a boat. I don’t think anything now or in the future will change that. Glass, fully ballasted boat, a tower, tunes pumping…there is no substitute for that. The perfect wake will always be the epitome of what it is and means to be wakeboarding.

Everything else might further the sport but the future is already here.

Last fall in LA, I had the chance to work as a Production Assistant on the “Notorious” shoot for Arnette. The shoot was shot by Tim Tadder, a professional photographer who resides in Carlsbad, and the rest of the work was taken on by the Onit Production team (including me.) The “Notorious” collection was launched by Arnette in October of 2008 with a bad ass bash in Sydney, Australia. I’m pretty sure it was a smashing event considering the talent and Snoop Dogg hosting. The “Notorious” collection ads, which we were shooting, featured 7 different Action Sports athletes. I definitely had starry eyes when Surfers Jamie O’Brien and Timmy Reyes showed up. Then, Matt Manzari and Randall Harris made an appearance, two of the top Wakeboarders in the country. I decided to take it apon myself to do a little research on Randall, the tatted up SoCal resident . Here is what I found…

Randall was born in Waco, TX.

Randall grew up skateboarding, but started hitting the water at age 12.

Randall’s nickname is “The Vandall.”

Randall is sponsored by Malibu boats, Quiksilver, Arnette, Company Wakeboards and Rockstar.

Randall is known for his big moves, big air and big… haha just kidding.

Randall currently resides near Huntington Beach, CA. Quiksilver reported on June 5, 2009 that Randall and his crew, aka the West Side Riders (WSR) have a new residency in a private community ’round those parts. Jealous?

Randall has won such awards as the ”2007 Rider of the Year” from Alliance Magazine and “Best Wake Rider” from Wakeboarding Magazine.

He has a twitter account: ThisizVandall

In January of this year, Randall joined the Axis Wake Research team. Which leads me to the following video:

The Axis Team introduced the new Axis 22 boat on Lake Elsinore on February 20, 2009 with “The Vandall” as the lucky guinea pig. I just spotted this video at alliancewake.com and thought it was pretty cool. The boat can fit up to 13 people, has a Wakebox 900 Ballast system, and is pretty snazzy to say the least. Maybe we will see “Randall The Vandall” out in SD with his new Axis. One can only hope he has a few extra spots.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7zdHxpRdlw

Officials say a proposed cable ski park would attract more youths and families to Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, but some neighbors say the crowds will bring traffic and noise to their community.

The city of Santee’s environmental report on the project has been completed and is available for public review until June 13. The Santee City Council is expected to hold a public hearing and vote on the plans in late June or early July.

The Padre Dam Municipal Water District, which oversees the 190-acre park, proposed the cable ski park in 2006. Using one of the seven lakes, the $2.5 million ski park would allow wakeboarders to skim along the water pulled by a cable from above. Padre Dam’s board approved the project in November 2007.

There are about 140 cable ski parks worldwide, with 10 in the United States: five in Florida and others in Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma and North Carolina.

The ski park at Santee Lakes would be built and managed by Sudweeks Development of Canyon Lake. The company would pay at least $100,000 a year in a 30-year lease with the water district. It says the park would earn more than $1 million yearly in ticket sales.

The proposal includes six 35-foot-tall stanchions to support the cables, a 9,700-square-foot complex with an observation deck, and a 3,200-square-foot restaurant. The park would provide 128 parking spaces, plus 139 overflow spots for major events.

The cable skiers would be swimming in Santee Lakes’ reclaimed water, which is treated sewage water. The water meets cleanliness standards for recreational use, although it isn’t intended for drinking.

The environmental report by Santee city planners found that the cable ski park would not have a significant effect on noise, traffic, water quality or wildlife.

The planners said the cable ski park would add a negligible amount of noise and that neighbors’ views of the park would mostly be screened by trees. Almost 500 vehicle trips a day would be made to the park, but that would not have a significant effect on local roads, the report said.

Lupe Gillenberg, 65, who has lived on Pebble Beach Drive near Santee Lakes for 20 years, disagreed. She said she fears the cable ski park will destroy her neighborhood.

“There’s going to be too many people, too many cars, too many buses,” she said. “It’s going to be noisy and dirty and crowded.”

Allen Carlisle, manager of Santee Lakes, said he held numerous meetings with neighborhood residents to address their concerns about the park. To discourage visitors to the cable ski park from parking in the neighborhood, visitors will be reimbursed for their parking fee at Santee Lakes, he said.

Carlisle said it will take about 18 months to build the cable ski park once the Santee City Council approves the plan.

“We think it’s going to be not only a benefit for Santee Lakes, but the community as a whole,” Carlisle said.
