Why I Hate Jet Skiers

posted by Metis Black

So I’m at the river, safe on our little piece of dry land with my E-Z up, beach chairs, bbq ice chest and nice bottle of mojitos and all of a sudden a boat and 4 jet skis invade. Really I was cool about it- I share pretty darn well. The boat beached and they got out some drinks, chairs and set up a horse shoe toss and all might have been peachy except for the one jerk off.

There’s always one in a group of jet skiers and this group was no exception. His friends were out in the water relaxing, talking, drinking, staying cool and he was spinning donuts until the fuse in his brain fizzled and he sped directly at the bunch of his friends and right before impact he jumped off. He did this repeatedly like a one trick pony accept it wasn’t really a trick.

Last Saturday I was at Mission Bay. The morning had been amazing— the water glass and I was catching air. As 9 o-clock comes, I’m getting out of the water. The truck has backed down the dock, the trailer is in place, I’m 10 feet off driving up slowly when a jet skier pulls right between me and the trailer. I shit you not. In the boat I’m yelling at him. He’s oblivious. He’s just looking at the truck and the trailer missing what’s in the water completely.

Perhaps if there was a license for jet skiing; if there was a big insurance policy you had to buy before you got to ride; if there was a blow test for alcohol and a Darwin test for common sense and survival— maybe then I’d be a little more understanding.

Some New Magic on the Front Page

I finally got around to adding in a few new features on the front page.    I removed the “Meet The Krew” section because Google Analytics tells me that people would rather meet us in person, not online :).  You can still access that link up at the top nav if you want to, but I may be removing it soon regardless.

The weather plugin is active, and seems to be fairly accurate.  I went with the Accuweather one because they list wind speed.  Keep in mind its set for 92117 weather, but should be fairly accurate for the surrounding areas (maybe add +5 degrees to the east?).

The coolest new innovation is the flash photo gallery I put up.  This will show all the latest pics (So please send me any pictures that you have!).  It requires Flash Version 9 to navigate through the pictures properly, so you may need to upgrade.

If you have any other ideas of how we can improve the site, keep them coming!

New Product: DBG Concepts Tower Hoist

DBG Tower Hoist from wakeboardsd on Vimeo.

DBG Concepts is the premier Manufacturer of Wakeboard Towers and Accessories, one of the last Manufacturers that not only builds production products but also high quality custom towers crafted to exceed the customer’s expectations.

A customer approached DBG with the need to assist a disabled family member into their new boat. With their family member being very active loving to tube and swim, their new boat made it hard to get aboard due to the height that the swim platform sat out of the water.

DBG designed and built a custom hoisting system which mates to one of their premier “DBG BILLET SWOOP XL” wakeboard towers. With a close look you will notice that the hoisting mechanism is neatly hidden in a custom speaker can (yes, there is a working speaker in the can) so that unless it is extended out or seen in use, one can hardly tell it’s different from any other DBG concepts tower.

How To Change Your Inboard Oil

Thanks to Gramps for this. I had a post up in the forum regarding changing the oil on the Calabria, and he was awesome to send me a step by step description of exactly what to do. Reference this if you need help like I did!

It’s easy and should take less than an hour.

Get the motor to running temperature, shut it off and take the small hose
attached to the bottom of the pan out the drain plug hole and unscrew the
end. Let it drip into something big enough to handle 4 to 6 qts of oil. If
you let it drip overnight it will drain it almost completely, you should
unscrew the oil filler cap letting air in so it all will run out. Replace
the plug on the end of the hose and put it back where you found it.

Get an oil filter wrench and unscrew the oil filter, get a vons bag or some
sort of plastic bag around the oil filter and put some rags below the point
it attaches so you can catch the filter and any oil that drips without
making a mess of your bilge. Make sure you remove the old rubber gasket
before installing the new oil filter. Pour half a qt. of oil into the new
filter before installing it (saves you some time when filling the engine
with oil) run a little oil around the rubber gasket before you tighten the
new filter this will help the filter/gasket seat when you get it tight.
Install it hand tight and then use the wrench and give it another 1/4 to 1/2
a turn NOTHING MORE than that or it will be a bitch to get off.

Pump the tranny fluid out with an electric pump or hand pump, you will only
be able to get out between 85% - 90% of the fluid out. This is more than
sufficient enough, just replace what you took out and check your levels
before starting the boat. After running it for enough time for the motor to
pump it thru the entire system RECHECK your levels and top off where needed.

Should run you less than $30 in parts and an hour or so since this is your
first time.

Good luck!
